PURPOSE: A method for detecting the tracking error and the apparatus thereby are provided to abstract the tracking error in the state there is no disk wobble. CONSTITUTION: A tracking error detection apparatus is composed of a subtraction/addition device, a band pass filter, a subtraction device and a low pass filter. The subtraction/addition device receives the input of the reference signal(A,B,C,D) to adjust the location of pickup and generates the reference signal of x axis and y axis. The band pass filter receives the reference signal of x axis and y axis outputted from the subtraction/addition device and detects only a specific frequency band. The subtraction device subtracts the output signal of the subtraction/addition device from the output of the band pass filter and outputs the subtracted value. The low pass filter eliminates noise from the output signal of the subtraction device and outputs it.
