A system for selectively removing ions, especially metal ions, from aqueous liquid streams, said system comprising: an ionophore, which selectively binds to ions to be removed, being present in the liquid stream so as to yield an ion-ionophore complex, a hydrophobic solvent for said ionophore, said solvent being essentially immiscible with the aqueous liquid stream, wherein the ion-ionophore complex essentially is dissolvable in the hydrophobic solvent only. |
