The present invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine, mainly in a motor vehicle, wherein said engine is provided with a fuel pump (3) for supplying fuel into a pressure accumulator (9). A control device (14) is connected to the fuel pump (3). The flow rate of the fuel pump (3) is variable and a desired value can be set for the amount of fuel supplied to the pressure accumulator (9) by influencing the flow rate of said fuel pump (3). The control device (14) is used for adjusting the flow rate of the fuel pump according to several input quantities using a characteristic diagram (15).
