A printer which forms dots by two-way shuttling of main scanning using K-, C-, M-, Y-color inks, wherein delay circuits for changing ink jet timings are provided for respective nozzle rows. Dot forming timings at a backward motion of K and at forward and backward motions of C, M and Y are set with reference to a forward motion of K by printing seven types of test patterns. Delay circuits delay drive waveform output timings according to the set dot forming timings, thereby reducing deviations in dot positions caused for all the colors by two-way shuttling and realizing a high-quality printing. Delay circuits can be provided for respective ink colors and respective nozzle groups such as nozzle drive mechanisms, in addition to for nozzle rows. In a printer which forms dots at a forward or backward motion only, a dot forming timing may be adjusted for each nozzle group.
