An electronic identification, control, and security system includes an electric power distribution network (54) having plural electric conductors, plural electric outlets, a controller (72) electrically coupled to the distribution network (54) through one of the electrical outlets. The appliance (56, 58, 60, 62) includes security and control logic (106), an interface (102) which circuitry (110) for disabling operation of the appliance. The controller (72) which may be a personal computer or a portable unit transmits individualized information to the appliance (56, 58, 60, 62) via the distribution network (54). The appliance (56, 58, 60, 62) includes a unique identification code stored therein, and the individualized information contains an address portion containing the identification code. The appliance (56, 58, 60, 62) also includes a security code stored therein which must be transmitted to allow operation of the appliance.
