A universal coupler (232) for a self aligning linear actuator for a valve assembly (200). The self aligning linear actuator utilizes a drive screw (206) or other threaded drive means to drive a plunger (204) for a throttle valve. The drive screw rotates within a frame (221) while a threaded collar (230) or ball screw coupled to a drive coupler (234) drives the plunger parallel to the drive screw. The universal coupler relieves any bending strain induced by misalignment between the drive screw and the plunger by allowing pivotal movement of the drive coupler relative to the drive screw. The universal coupler comprises an outer cylinder (250) having a first axial bore (302), a first inner cylinder (252), and a second inner cylinder (254) both disposed within the first axial bore and pivotally connected to said outer cylinder. |
