A biopsy system comprising a housing; a biopsy instrument being disposed within the housing and including a first tubular member having a tissue basket disposed near a distal end thereof, the tissue basket being configured for retrieval of tissue, the biopsy instrument further including a tubular knife member coaxially disposed relative to the first tubular member and being configured for actuation relative to the first tubular member to effect severing a discrete tissue sample; and a linear advancement control assembly disposed within the housing and configured to cause actuation of the tubular knife member.
