The invention concerns a method for improving the starting conditions of a direct injection internal combustion engine supplied with high pressure fuel through a supply circuit comprising a high pressure pump (5) interposed between a fuel tank (1) and a fuel dispensing ramp (6). The invention is characterised in that it consists in cooling said fuel in said circuit when the engine is not running, in order to condense it or prevent its evaporation. The invention is applicable to an internal combustion engine powering a motor vehicle.
