The tool has a coating on the inner surface (2) of the tool (3,4) forming the mould volume (5) that keeps the pores open and hence maintains the filtration characteristics of the tool. The coating can be applied using a physical, chemical or electrochemical process. The pore diameter of the coating is less than that of the porous plastic tool and hence allows fine particle material to be molded.
