Upon initiation (1) of a gear change sequence, where two or more sub-gearboxes in the composite gearbox need to be changed, then a value (6) for the expected synchronisation energy or power is calculated on the basis of at least one rotational speed parameter (4), information (2) on the present gear, information (3) on the requested gear and information stored in memory regarding the sluggishness of the gearbox components. Gear change for the different sub-gearboxes is then activated (7) according to a time sequence that minimises total gear change time, whilst making sure that each part of the calculated value in relation to the respective sub-gearbox carrying out the actual gear change does not exceed a pre-determined maximum limit. An Independent claim is also included for the gear change control system used.
