The method involves compressing (4) combustion air in the induction tract (7) using a charger, feeding it to the cylinders, compressing it with the pistons in the cylinders and blowing it out via braking valves into the exhaust tract (6). Heated combustion air is fed to the cylinders in engine braking mode, whereby the higher temp. of the combustion air is achieved by using the available thermal energy. An Independent claim is also included for an engine braking device.
