Goods or packages are provided with a machine-readable chip which stores information relating to the type and characteristics of the goods. The chip is a passive transmitter or a receiver and detected by a reading apparatus, independent of the position, the direction of spatial separation or arrangement with respect to the reading apparatus. Containers for transporting the goods are easily removable for placement on a movable rack.
