A sulfur trap for an exhaust cleaning system of an internal combustion engine is separated in n > 1 segregated segments. A heating device is allocated to each segment of the sulfur trap. The heating device of each segment can be controlled individually in such a way that each segment is separately heated to the desulfation temperature. The inventive sulfur trap is connected upstream a NOx storage catalyst. At least one segment of the sulfur trap is heated to the desulfation temperature during the regeneration phase of the storage catalyst.
