A circulator (150) receives spontaneous emission light from the first erbium-doped fibre amplifier stages (EDFA). A fiber optic connector (160) positioned between the circulator and the wave division multiplexed (WDM) (170) coupler receives and transmits spontaneous emission light to the second EDFA stage. The second EDFA stage (120) comprises of an optical pumping device (126) which pumps one optical fibre portion (124), but not the other optical fibre portion (122).
