The first operating condition is taken when the armature begins to separate from one of the abutting surfaces of the first and second electromagnets in the actuator of the gas exchange valve, until the armature reaches a preset position (S1, S2). Alternatively the first condition is taken when the armature separates from one of the surfaces and reaches a preset speed, until its acceleration has reached a preset value or for a preset time period. The operating value is the temperature or the load on the combustion engine. The position and/or speed and/or acceleration of the armature is used as the controlled variable and reference variable. The servo mechanism electromagnet armature plate that moves between a first abutting surface of the first electromagnet and a second abutting surface of a second electromagnet i.e. between the shut and the open position. Return springs hold the armature plate in a rest position.
