PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium low in noise, good in short wavelength output and S/N and excellent in durability by forming a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and diamond powder and controlling the average particle size and the coefft. of variation of the diamond powder to be in a specified range. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer containing at least ferromagnetic powder and diamond powder formed on a supporting body, and the diamond powder has 3 to 200 nm average particle size and 3 to 60% coefft. of variation of the particle size. A nonmagnetic layer essentially comprising nonmagnetic powder and a binder resin is formed between the supporting body and the magnetic layer. The dry film thickness of the magnetic layer is controlled to 0.05 to 0.5 mm. Moreover, the ferromagnetic powder is ferromagnetic metal powder having 30 to 120 nm average major axial length, 3.0 to 10.0 average aspect ratio and 5 to 30% coefft. of variation of the aspect ratio. |
