PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an area managing method capable of reducing the processing quantity of a device at the time of writing or erasing data in/from a file and easily grasping the continuity of free areas on the device side. SOLUTION: In this area management method, respective entries corresponding to respective blocks on a recording medium are prepared on an area management map and 1st field for storing information on the number of blocks in a continuous recording area allocated to the corresponding blocks and a 2nd field for storing the positional information (address) of a leading block in a succeeding continuous recording area are prepared in each entry.
