PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a picture used in facsimile transmission in the mm system and a picture transferred to a terminal through a LAN by the inch system by changing reading possible resolution at the time of scanner operation in accordance with the use possible capacity of a memory dealing with the picture which is read from a scanner. SOLUTION: The reading circuit 14 of facsimile equipment linearly interpolates resolution in a main operation direction with resolution designated by a signal line 20f and outputs it by a scanner device outputting read data. When a memory dealing with the picture is not more than 1.1 M bytes, a control circuit 20 executes reading at similar resolution in an mm system in both facsimile transmission and a scanner operation: where (main scanning direction, auxiliary scanning direction)=(8 pel/mm, 3.85 line/mm), (8, 7.7), (8, 15.4) and (16, 15.4), and reading at constant speed is executed at the time of the scanner operation when it exceeds 1.1 M bytes. Then, reading at the resolution of (300 dpi and 300 dpi) is realized in the order of the main scanning direction and the auxiliary scanning direction.
