PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium of high recording density superior in surface characteristic and electromagnetic transducing characteristic. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium provided, on the supporting body, with a bottom magnetic layer consisting of a metallic thin film and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic metallic powder, the coercive force of the medium in the horizontal direction is 120 kA/m or higher, the ferromagnetic metallic powder is oriented in the horizontal direction of the medium, while the coercive force in the vertical direction of the bottom magnetic layer is 50 kA/m or higher, and in a plane orthogonally crossing the horizontal direction of the medium, an external magnetic field is applied in the direction forming 45-135 deg. angle from the horizontal direction, and the maximum value is 1.5 or more when the ratio is obtained between the maximum valueχmax of the magnetic susceptibility of the bottom magnetic layer measured in the direction of each angle and the magnetic susceptibilityχ8 of the bottom magnetic layer measured by applying the external magnetic field of 8 kA/m in the direction of the same angle.
