The invention concerns a method and a reactor for carrying out endothermic, in particular catalytic, reactions. The reactor consists of one or more vertical catalysis tubes (1), each with a catalyser layer (6) having an annular cross-section and with an inlet at the top (2) for the product to be processed and a coaxially disposed cylindrical outlet line (3), leading from the bottom to the top, for the processed product. The catalysis tubes (1) are surrounded by cylindrical thermal jackets (7) also disposed coaxially, part of each jacket being housed in a heating chamber (8), made of refractory material, in which the combustion gases from the output lines (12) of an externally located adiabatic burner pass down from the top to the bottom over the outside surface of the thermal jacket (7), subsequently passing through external lines (9) into the top of the heating chamber (8) where they flow down through the interior of the thermal jacket, passing over the outside surface of the catalysis tubes (1) and thus exchanging heat, in parallel flow, both with the reaction products in the catalysis tubes (1) and with the hot combustion gases which have just entered the heating chambe (8). |
