PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the operability of the camera when a picture is displayed on a monitor that is externally connected to the camera. SOLUTION: When a cable connection detection circuit 219 detects a monitor externally connected to a video output terminal 7 in the case of reproducing and displaying a recorded picture or the like, drive of an LCD drive circuit 207 is stopped and the recorded picture or the like is displayed on only the monitor. When a display switch provided to an operation section 210 is operated in this state, the LCD drive circuit 207 is driven and the recorded picture or the like displayed on the monitor in external connection to the camera is also displayed on an LCD display section 13. Even when picture display onto the LCD display section 13 is stopped by external connection of the monitor to the camera, the user can easily operate the camera while seeing the displayed picture by using the display switch to allow the picture to be displayed on the LCD display section 13.
