PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing unit where an operation control program of the unit can be changed without replacement of ROMs even after shipping of the unit also in the case the unit is not designed for external connection and to provide an image processing method. SOLUTION: The image processing unit is provided with a 1st firmware module in charge of controlling connection with a host device 200, a 2nd firmware module in charge of controlling connection with a subordinate device 150, and an image read means 106 that reads an image under the control of a central processing unit 101. The host device 200 can rewrite the data stored in the 2nd firmware module and the operation of the image read means 106 is inhibited for the rewrite period.
