PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a man-hour and accuracy in designing a coil by easily obtaining a desired magnetic field distribution and a coil cross section with a small number of design parameters, by expressing the Z axis cross sectional shape of the internal curved surface and the external curved surface of a horizontal deflection coil, a vertical deflection coil and a ferrite core constituting a deflection yoke mounted to the external surface of a funnel, by a single function in one quadrant. SOLUTION: A function is (X-X')/a}n+ (Y- Y')}/b)m=1, ((a), (b), (n), (m) are constants). The reference line 8 of a color picture tube is univocally determined by the size of a phosphor screen 2 and a deflection angleθ. The external curved surface of a funnel 4 is determined at this position, and the internal curved surface of a horizontal deflection coil 10 is expressed by the function for instance so as to run parallel to the external curved surface. (n), (m) are determined by drawing a curved line by defining parameters, (a), (b), X', Y'. The external curved surface is then determined. Thereby, a smoothly curved coil surface is drawn to reduce winding variation, and a color picture tube having excellent quality can be obtained.
