PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispense with a utility such as a defragmentation by deciding the maxium size which is usable as an auxiliary spare area and assigning the auxiliary spare area while making sizes of increase portions changable within the usable size. SOLUTION: When a spare area SA-pri to be used when a defect is generated in a user area becomes full, a new spare area, that is, an auxiliary spare area SA-sup is assigned again at the termination of the user area. When assigning of the auxiliary spare area SA-sup is executed only one time, the size of the area SA-sup is made to be the maximum usable size or a size equal to or small than this size. In the case of assigning an auxiliary spare area SA-sup while dividing it into variable sizes several times at necessary times within the usable size, increase portions to be extended are not constant sizes and they are changed. In this case, after the area extended earlier is fully used, a next extended area is activated.
