PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a recording form decision device for a VTR that can comparatively simply and surely decide a recording format of a signal recorded on a recording medium. SOLUTION: After amplifying a signal reproduced by a rotary head 1 with a head amplifier 3 having an automatic gain control function up to a prescribed level, a narrow band pass filter BPF1 (5) and a detection circuit DET1 and LPF (8) that amplifies and detects an output of the BPF1 (5) are used to select a frequency of the signal and the signal is detected. Then a differential comparator COMP1 (10) compares the signal with a reference voltage REF1 (9), an integration circuit 1 (11) integrates the result of comparison, a hold circuit (12) holds the integrated signal, a differential comparator COMP2 (13) compares the holding signal with a reference voltage REF2 (14), and a microcomputer 15 decides a recording format of the signal recorded on a recoding medium based on an output of the comparison result.
