PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp equipped with excellent sealing without using expensive platinum in an external lead wire by improving a sealing structure, and a lighting system by using the lamp. SOLUTION: A feeding conductor FC, introduced in a small diameter cylinder part SEb arranged linking to a swelling part SEa of a translucent ceramics discharge container SE, is composed of a sealing part FCa and a refractory part FCb connected to the head of the sealing part FCa. The interval between the small diameter cylinder part SEb and the sealing part FCa is encircled and sealed by a first seal S1, so that the sealing part FCa is not exposed at least to the discharge space side. An external lead wire OR is connected to the base end of the sealing part FCa projecting outside from the end part of the small diameter cylinder part SEb, and the connection part between the base end of the sealing part FCa and the external lead wire OR is encircled and sealed by a second seal S2 having a melting point lower than the first seal S1 by 300 deg.C or more, preferably by 400 deg.C or more.
