PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a video image, whose aspect ratio is 4:3 onto a display device with a display screen whose aspect ratio is 16:9, without missing a video image on the entire screen and to reduce distortions. SOLUTION: The display device is provided with a vertical nonlinarity processing means, where a video image whose aspect ratio is 4:3 is displayed on a display screen whose aspect ratio is 16:9, while being nearly matching with each other, a display size in the vertical direction is made almost constant in the middle in the vertical direction, and the size is sequentially and continuously decreased toward the upper and lower ends of the display screen relatively, with respect to the image displayed in the middle in a range from the end of the middle part of the upper and lower part to the upper lower ends of the display screen. A vertical deflection circuit is used, which has a waveform shaping circuit (linearity correction circuit 27) that waveform-shapes a vertical sawtooth wave signal, so as to non-linearize the display size in the vertical direction for the vertical nonlinearizing means. |
