摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain an optical waveguide type deflector which varies the luminous flux width of waveguide light propagated in an optical waveguide layer by using a reflection part composed of simple constitution. CONSTITUTION:An end surface provided on the end of a waveguide layer 2 is tapered surface 1 which is not perpendicular to the waveguide layer 2 and the inclination (taper angle phi) of the tapered surface 1 is continuously varied in the tapered surface in parallel to the waveguide 2 and perpendicularly to the tapering direction. The advantage of high deflection efficiency is obtained since deflection by the tapered structure in the optical path propagation direction in a layer having an equivalent refractive index distribution is used in principle, and the element is miniaturized and simplified as compared with a conventional luminous flux width control method by an expander or compressor consisting of plural curved surface having positive power and negative power since a function which controls the width of the luminous flux is provided, as well.
