Preparation of nizatidine, i.e. N-[2-[[[2-(dimethylamino)methyl-4-thiazolyl]methyl]thio]ethyl]-N'-methyl-2-nitro-1,1-ethenediamine, of formula (I) (or its salt) involves reaction of 2-nitromethylene-imidazolidine of formula (II) with a 4-(substituted methyl)-2-dimethylaminomethyl-imidazole of formula (III) (or its salt) in the presence of methylamine and an inert diluent. X = leaving group, preferably halo, mesyloxy or tosyloxy. |
