A variable resistor comprises a tubular housing one or more resistance elements disposed on its cylindrical wall, a contact assembly which is mounted at one end of the housing on a centrally disposed shaft and has a peripheral portion extending over a major portion of the length of the housing, and a drive mechanism for the contact assembly mounted at the end of the housing remote from the mounting of the contact assembly within a portion of the housing around which the peripheral portion of the contact assembly sweeps. The drive mechanism may comprise a gear train and/or a drive motor. A helical potentiometer, Fig. 2, comprises a tubular housing 51 having a " coiled coil " resistance element 50 mounted on its inner surface. On one end of the housing is mounted a contact assembly 29 in a bearing 33, the assembly having a peripheral portion extending substantially the length of the housing and slidably carrying the contact member located in its position along the housing by a pair of fingers extending into the gaps between adjacent turns of the resistance coil 50. Electrical connection to the contact member being maintained via wire 41 and slip ring and brush 46 and 44. On the end of the, housing, within the volume swept out by the peripheral portion of the contact assembly, is mounted a gear train 11 which transmits the drive to the contact assembly from a servomotor 15. |
