PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a red light-emitting fluorescent material having a specific chemical compositional formula, capable of being excited with long wavelength UV light and short wavelength visible light to emit the red light in high luminance, and useful for light-emitting screens, or the like, by activating a rare earth element oxysulfide fluorescent material with europium. SOLUTION: This red light-emitting fluorescent material is obtained by weighing Gd2O3, Eu2O3 and MgCO3 as raw materials for the fluorescent material, placing the weighed raw materials in a ceramic pot, sufficiently mixing the raw materials with ball mills, adding sulfur and further NaCO3 as a fusing agent to the mixture, charging the mixture in an alumina crucible, calcining the mixture at 1,100 deg.C for 5 hr, washing the product with water, and subsequently drying the product. The obtained red light-emitting fluorescent material capable of being activated with europium has the chemical composition formula [0.001<=(x)<=0.5: 0.00001<=(y)<=0.3; L is Y, La, Gd or Lu; M is a coactivator such as Mg, Sr or Ba]. The fluorescent material can be excited with long wavelength UV light and short wavelength visible light to emit the red light in higher brightness than conventional fluorescent materials.
