PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and an apparatus in which an instruction based on an analyzed value can be given precisely and quickly to a refining operation by a method wherein the bonding species of an element contained in a slug is identified on the basis of a wavelength at which the intensity of the directly collected infrared emission spectrum of the slug displays a peak and its concentration is quantitatively determined. SOLUTION: In this method, infrared rays are collected directly from a slug inside a refining container by using a collecting and condensing system 5 which is installed at the upper part of the refining container. That is to say, an optical fiber 1 is cooled by a water-cooled jacket 2, and a condensing optical system 4 which is composed of a convex lens and a concave lens collects the infrared rays from the wide range of the slug. At this time, dust particles which disturb a measurement are removed as an inert gas 13 from an atmosphere up to the surface of the slug to be light-collected by using a gas blowoff port 12, and a part of the inert gas 13 is blown to the surface of the lens so as to prevent the dust particles from being stuck. A spectral device to which the collected infrared rays are conveyed from the optical fiber 1 measures the intensity of every infrared spectrum of the bonding species of an element contained in the slug, and the bonding species of the element is identified on the basis of the peak wavelength of the intensity of the spectrum. The intensity of the spectrum is compared with a working curve, and the concentration of the bonding species is quantitatively determined.
