PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently remove mercury in a liquid hydrocarbon by a highly simple means without enormous energy consumption by bringing the mercury- contg. liquid hydrocarbon into contact with water and sludge contacted with crude oil. SOLUTION: Mercury in a liquid hydrocarbon is removed by bringing the liquid hydrocarbon such as crude oil containing the mercury such as in the form of simple substance and/or in an ionic form (the concentration being normally 2-1,000 w/v ppb) into contact with water and sludge contacted with the crude oil, wherein it is preferable that the weight ratio of the water to the mercury-contg. liquid hydrocarbon is (1:1,000) to (500:1,000) and the weight ratio of the sludge (on a dry basis) to the above hydrocarbon is (0.000001:1,000) to (0.01:1).
