PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fuel oil composition having excellent cleaning effect even under severe conditions such as in engine cooling without causing sludge formation, and useful in internal combustion engines or the like by including a compound having phenolic hydroxyl group(s). SOLUTION: This fuel oil composition is such one as to contain pref. 0.01-3 wt.% of a compound having phenolic hydroxyl group(s) such as 2,6-di-t-butyl-p- cresol, 2,2'-methylene-bis(4-methyl6-t-butylphenol or 2(2'-hydroxy-5'-methylphenyl) benzotriazole.
