Metal phthalocyanines are made by heating a reaction mixture containing a phthalocyanine intermediate consisting of benzene carrying solely two ortho substituents other than ortho nitrile groups which may be joined together and which are capable of forming a tetrazaporphin ring, a metal donor, ammonium chloride and a nitrogen donor selected from urea, biuret, guanidine, guanidyl-urea, dicyandiamide and cyanuric acid. A catalyst such as ammonium molybdate and an inert solvent may be present. Phthalocyanine intermediates specified are phthalic anhydride, phthalic acid and its esters and salts, phthalodiamide and phthalimide. Metal donors specified are compounds of copper, cobalt, nickel, iron, magnesium, zinc, aluminium and vanadium. Comparative examples in which the ammonium chloride is omitted are also given. |
