The IC engine's crankshaft or output shaft (20) is concentrically connected by a short shaft (60) with two splined ends (62,66) to the generally discoid (44,36) rotor (16) of the electrical machine. The rotor runs in a bearing (28) mounted on the central cylindrical up stand (38) of the machine's stator (12), whose main component is a circular plate (22) screwed (13) to the IC engine cylinder block (14). The stator winding (34), opt. permanent magnets, mounted on the plate, is separated by an air-gap (52) from the rotor winding, opt. permanent magnets, peripherally mounted inside a finned (39) cylindrical housing (37), shielding the electrical machine. The rear face of the rotor disk (36) forms part of the clutch (18,72) through which torque is applied to the gearbox, opt. torque converter, input shaft (74). The liquid cooling system of the engine is opt. extended into the electrical stator by circulation channels (54,56), provided with seals (58) at the interface. Toroidal seals are also provided (70) for the main shaft and (48) the main bearing (28). The electrical machine may be used in motor mode as the engine starter and/or to assist the fully loaded engine; in the generator mode it can operate as a regenerative brake or battery charger.
