PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent cracking likely generated during thermal loading in the interface between the upper layer and lower layer of friction material of double layer structure. SOLUTION: A non-asbestos type friction material composition is formed from a fiber base material selected among inorganic fiber, organic fiber and metal fiber, a friction adjusting material, cashew dust, other fillers, and a binder resin, to provide a friction material of double layer structure, wherein the peripheral edge of the lower layer 3 contacting with a rear plate 2 is shaped as higher than the central part. Preferably the crude material mixture of the lower layer 3 should be pelletized granularly, which will enhance the bonding strength with the rear plate 2.
