PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a polarizer having durability against high temperature, effective for polarizing radiation rays radiated from a projection type television system or the like and having mutually independent metallic grains. SOLUTION: A transparent glass substrate 12 is prepared and long and narrow and mutually independent metallic grains 22 parallel with the surface of the substrate 12 are formed so as to be connected to the surface of the substrate 12. Each metallic grain 22 has a refractive index proportional to the square of wavelengthλwithin a range of 180 to 700 nm and respective metallic grains 12 are arranged at intervals allowing the grains 12 to effectively polarize light having wavelength within the range of 180 to 700 nm and passing these grains 22.
