<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain iron of high purity by heating iron oxide containing carbon to be fed to a surface of a hearth layer of a rotary hearth furnace, reducing the iron oxide with carbon to separate molten grains consisting of iron containing carbon generated on the layer surface from slag granules, and cooling and solidifying molten small grains to take out solid metal grains consisting of iron containing carbon. SOLUTION: A glass layer consisting of iron, carbon and silica compound is formed on a surface 30 of a hearth layer of a rotary hearth furnace 10, and a protective layer formed of a covering substance containing MgO, etc., is formed thereon. Raw ingots 28 consisting of iron oxide containing carbon are fed on the covering substance, and heated to 1450-1600 deg.C using a plurality of radiant heat sources to reduce iron oxide with carbon. The covering substance separates molten small grains from the slag as by-product. The molten small grains are cooled and solidified on a surface of a cooling plate 48 arranged near the surface 30 of the hearth layer to take out solid metal grains 42 consisting of iron containing carbon whose iron content exceeds 95 mass.% from a discharge zone 18.</p> |
