An expression system useful in higher plants, comprising the GapC4 promoter or parts or variants of the promoter GapC4 and a gene to be expressed. It is useful for the anaerobic expression of resistance factors preferably for cultivated plants such as potatoes, rice, grain, corn, tomatoes, brassicaceae, leguminous plants, cotton, sugar beets and carrots. The resistance factors expressed are antibacterial proteins. Transgenic plants such as potatoes, contain an expression system from the promoter GapC4 and the gene T4 lysozyme, producing transgenic potatoes resistant to phytopathogenic bacteria.
