The inlet or exhaust valve of an internal combustion engine has a piston rod (5) to which a pressure is applied from a hydraulic spring (9,10,11) connected to a pressure source displaceable from one definite position to the other with linear motion. This is effected by a pressure controller (19,22-25) which maintains constant the pressure of the hydraulic spring on the piston rod (5).
