The assembly has a housing (2) with an upper cold air branch (13) and a lower heating branch (14) in which a heat exchanger (12) is installed. The two branches are arranged between an air inlet (6) and a mixing zone (15). The outlet of the upper branch has a transverse dimension that is less than the transverse dimension of the of the outlet of the lower branch and the mixing zone. In this way a lateral section of the mixing zone is fed only with heated air. The mixing zone receives a flow of cold air from the outlet of the upper branch, and a flow of heated air from the outlet of the lower branch. This mixed air is delivered to an air distributor (8) that directs the air into the passenger compartment.
