PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compute a distance between two locations in out-of-sight by measuring an angle of an image pickup tube with a known distance between locations to a target to be measured, computing an angle of a distance between a distance measuring instrument and the target to be measured to a line connecting the distance measuring instrument with the target to be measured, and computing a distance between the targets to be measured from the obtained distance and angle. SOLUTION: This distance measuring instrument consists of image pickup tubes 1, 1', rotating bases 2, 2' measuring a rotational angle with the image pickup tubes 1, 1' on them, and a distance measuring instrument table 3 with the rotating bases 2, 2' on it and a level 4 at its midpoint. By rotating the rotating bases 2, 2' so that targets 8, 8' to be measured may be seen in the center of the display of the image pickup tubes 1, 1', an angle is obtained. Based on a distance between the known locations of the image pickup tubes 1, 1', a distance between the targets 8, 8' to be measured is computed using a mathematical method.
