A compound of formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof is claimed wherein: A is N or C-R11; X is H, OR1, S(O)nR1, NR1R2, CR1R2R3, optionally substituted phenyl or heteroaryl; n is 0 to 2; R1 is alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, arylalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl, cyanoalkyl, carboalkoxyalkyl, optionally substituted phenyl or heteroaryl; R2 and R3 are independently H, alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, arylalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl, cyanoalkyl, carboalkoxyalkyl, C(=O)CH3, optionally substituted phenyl or heteroaryl; R4 is H, alkyl, allyl, propargyl or optionally substituted benzyl or R1 and R4 together may optionally form with the atoms to which they are attached a 5-9 membered ring with the structural sequence between X and the ring nitrogen being -(CH2)p-W-(CH2)q-; p and q are independently 0 to 2; W is -CH2, C(CH3)2, C(=O), O, S or NCH3; R5 to R8 are independently H, alkyl, allyl, propargyl or optionally substituted phenyl or R4, R5 and R6 may optionally form with the atoms to which they are attached an optionally substituted tetrazole or imidazole ring or R5 and R6 may also be taken together to be O, S or NR12; R9 is optionally substituted phenyl, pyridyl or pyrimidinyl; R10 is H, alkyl or cyano; R11 is H, alkyl or halogen; R12 is H, alkyl or phenyl. A pharmaceutical composition containing the above defined compound useful for treating an affective disorder, anxiety, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, supranuclear palsy, immune suppression, Alzheimer's disease, gastrointestinal disease, anorexia nervosa or other feeding disorder, drug or alcohol withdrawal symptoms, drug additions or inflammatory disorders is claimed.
