Described are devices comprising and methods of use containing photomagnetic material that increases local magnetization after being irradiated with light. These may be optical computers, computer disks, both with read-write capability and random access memory, light weight motors, magnetic and analog films, tapes or substrates, digital films, tapes or substrates, optical switches, photocopiers and sensors. The method for recording information on a magnetic medium where: a) placing the magnetic medium in an applied magnetic field b) applying light to first location to induce magnetization so that the magnetization increases the strength of the magnetic field at the first location by a first amount to change the polarization of the first magnetically polarized local domain.
