PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for detecting image frames easily and surely. SOLUTION: A film 12 is irradiated by a light through the means of an LED 58, with the transmitted light quantity of the film 12 detected by sensors 60a-60e for detecting each image frame. After the transmitted light quantity so detected is A/D-converted by a CPU 42, the minimum value is determined for these data. The minimum value so determined is ternary-coded and, on the basis of the changed point of the ternary coded data, the image frame is detected.
