PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exactly monitor the variation of toughness of a reactor vessel support structure member. SOLUTION: The toughness monitoring device of the support structure of a reactor vessel has a monitoring device 1 in which a fracture toughness test piece 20 of a compact tension test piece type made of the same material as that producing the support structure. The fracture toughness test piece 20 follows the ASTM standard, has a cut 21 in the center, and is set to have a prescribed stress enlargement factor. Measuring terminals 9a and 9b bonded on the fracture toughness test piece 20 putting the notch 21 inbetween are connected to a microvolt meter 15 via a conductor 13 and measuring terminals 11a and 11b are connected to a constant voltage source 19 by way of a conductor 17.
