PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the reducion of contrast due to black floating and to make it possible to display a high-quality display image by applying the optical element to a projector device for projecting image light spatially modulated by a reflection type liquid crystal panel e.g. to a screen, a polarized beam splitter to be used for the projector device and a dichromic mirror. SOLUTION: A polarized beam splitter 28R (28G, 28B) to be an optical element is constituted so as to selectively transmit or reflect incident light transmitted through transparent optical blocks 31, 32 by a dielectric multi-layer film 34 formed between the blocks 31, 32. A transparent plate material 33 consisting of a parallel plate forming the multi-layer film 34 is arranged between the blocks 31, 32 and a space between the blocks 31, 32 holding the film 34 between them is filled with a translucent liquid 35.
