摘要 1,033,507. Gaskets. C. NAPPEE. May 28, 1963 [May 30, 1962; April 29, 1963], No. 21216/63. Heading F2B. In a leak-tight joint between two metal members having corresponding openings 1-4, Fig. 1, for the passage of fluids and for accommodating screws 5 or other tightening means, a leak-proof gasket is located between the members and comprises a metal sheet having openings corresponding to those in the members and having mutually parallel grooves forming resilient ridges which are compressed between the members, some of the ridges, as shown in the left-hand upper half of Fig. 1, surrounding the openings for the tightening means and others extending around the opening or openings for the passage of fluids and partly surrounding the first ridges. The gasket may be used as a cylinder head gasket or as a flange gasket for an exhaust manifold. The grooves may be formed on either or both sides of a previously cut-out blank of sheet metal by diestamping, chemical etching or by electro-deposition of metal, e.g. copper, nickel or chrome on the surface or surfaces of the blank. The plane surface portions of the gasket may be coated, and the grooves partly filled, with hot-deposited ductile metal such as lead or tin or with colddeposited plastic material such as silicon or glycerophthalic varnish. The gasket may be made of metallic ridges joined by fabric as at 11 in Fig. 1. In Fig. 6, grooves obtained by diestamping are shown having portions 12 of reduced thickness which, when the parts to be sealed are tightened down, enable counterswaging to take place as at 13 in Fig. 8. The dot-dash lines of Fig. 6 represent a second superimposed gasket leaving between it and the first gasket grooves 14 which provide increased flexibility. Fig. 9 shows an arrangement of two opposed symmetrically grooved gaskets before tightening. In Fig. 15 grooves 22 which are offset from one face to the other are partly filled with plastic material, the offsetting assisting in bending of the metal when the gasket is tightened down so as to trap the plastic material 23, Fig. 16. In Fig. 18, an uncoated gasket having symmetrically arranged grooves digs at 24 into the joint faces. Fig. 19 shows electrodeposited strips 26 defining grooves 25 on a metal blank 27.
