PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce consumed power and cost and maintain high merchandise value by providing a pattern recognition means with an extension register for determining whether halftone gradation is displayed or not. SOLUTION: A color data determining means 2 determines color data corresponding to a given image data. A pattern recognition means 5 provides a display pattern corresponding to the color data, a thinning control means 3 thins out the color data to determine a given gradation data, and an extension register includes in the pattern recognition means 5 determines whether halftone gradation is displayed or not. In another method, the color data determining means 2 determines color data corresponding to the given image data, the pattern recognition means 5 provides the display pattern corresponding to the color data, the thinning control means 3 thins out the color data to determine the given gradation data, and an extension register included in the thinning control means 3 determines whether the halftone gradation is displayed or not.
